We really missed one of our highlights of the contemporary art calendar last year, but praise be – the RCA Secret exhibition is back. The annual postcard sale sees over 2,000 (this year it’s 2,700) miniature artworks displayed in a nine-day-long exhibition, before being sold for £45 a pop, with the artist’s identity for each piece hidden until after purchase. Usually the sale happens in November, but because of the RCA’s 145th anniversary shenanigans, 2012’s exhibition was put on hold. This year the venue has switched to the college’s new premises in Battersea and participating artists include David Bailey, Julian Opie and Paula Rego plus designers Paul Smith, Manolo Blahnik and Orla Kiely, whose postcard-sized creations will be shown alongside those by RCA students and recent graduates.
The exhibition opens today, so you can nip and try and spot the known artists and the rising stars ahead of the actual sale on March 23. Be warned though, you have to sign up here to be eligible to purchase – plus queues always wend round the block. However, its worth noting that this year 50 raffle winners (find out more details on the site) will be given entry one hour before the crowds.
