Very exciting news: the ballot has just opened to go and stay a night at A Room for London. Set up by Living Architecture (the project to promote modern architecture in Britain co-founded by Alain de Botton and also responsible for the Balancing Barn in Suffolk), it is shaped as a ‘boat’ perched above Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Southbank and inside has a bedroom, bathroom, library and kitchenette. It originally opened last year and demand was so overwhelming that they decided to allot nights by ballot (even though it costs £300 which apparently just barely covers the private lift, cleaning etc). The ballot was very quickly filled so we suggest that you get your entry in pronto for this year. We haven’t stayed ourselves but have heard from friends that it’s a totally magical, one-off experience with an amazing view of the sunset over the Thames and totally worth the price.
