Calypso Rose always wanted to run classes – but not the kind you’ve heard of. Her Indytute, which was launched this autumn and has taken up residency at Selfridges for the Christmas period, hosts the sort of fun classes that a progressive school teacher might have treated you to on a Friday afternoon. But the teachers in this case are entrepreneurs, designers and all sorts of other creatives. Learn how to create jewel-like icing on biscuits with The Biscuiteers or perfect your paper sculpting skills with Helen Friel of The Paper Engineer, who will teach you how to a make a paper taxidermy fish. Spend half a day learning how to lindy hop with The Swing Patrol or master blues guitar with The Stranglers ex-guitarist John Ellis (for which you will need a bit of basic knowledge). Or if you really want to splash out you could sign up to create a piece of neon art with Richard William Whether’s Neon Workshop Company. Needless to say the classes, which take place all over London, make great gifts for people who have everything, but who also have a little bit of time on their hands to learn a new skill or polish up an existing one.
