April 15 - September 10, 2017
OK, so these two shows (Alice’s Adventures Underground is for adults, Adventures in Wonderland is for kids) by theatre company Les Enfants Terrible are not on till April 2017 – yes, April next year – but honestly, they’re so good that it’s worth booking tickets now and working out your diary later. We saw Adventures in Wonderland last summer with our six year old, and were completely gobsmacked by its brilliance. Nor were we the only ones. 10,000 people saw the shows at the Vaults last year and Alice’s Adventures Underground was nominated for an Olivier award, so it’s no surprise that ‘Alice Underground’ is returning next year, and, take note, already selling out.
Adventures in Wonderland (we haven’t seen the adult version) is a completely immersive, interactive show, set in the Vaults underneath Waterloo Station, and you really do feel as if are entering Wonderland. You meet the white rabbit, Tweddle Dee and Tweedle Dum (a real highlight), the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat, and Humpty Dumpty; you really do see people getting bigger and tinier as they eat and drink victuals and cake with ‘eat me’ and ‘drink me’ instruction labels. Doors lead nowhere, or into chaos, or into flower-festooned tunnels, or a smelly kitchen, and you join a proper mad hatter’s tea party and eat jam tarts, then play croquet with flamingoes. The whole thing is just great and a brilliant experience for kids over 5 (it would be a bit scary for younger tots). We enjoyed it so much, we’re booking tickets to see it a second time, and highly recommend you mark your cards too.
