John Derian Picture Book & Talk at Liberty

For as long as we’ve visited New York, our first port of call has been John Derian’s highly addictive cluster of stores in the East Village. We’ve spent countless hours over many Christmases drooling over the decorations and just as much time again deciding on which decoupage plates and dishes to buy featuring flora and fauna, colour charts and typefaces, memos and drawings. It is without question one of our favourite stores in the world. Even if you haven’t been to the mothership you will probably know Derian’s hugely influential work from his UK stockists and his outpost at Liberty. Now the New Yorker has compiled the John Derian Picture Book (£60, Artisan) which draws together 300 of the 18th and 19th century illustrations he has collated over 30 years in a truly sumptuous book. Anna Wintour, who writes the foreword, confides that at Vogue they refer to Derian’s East Village flagship as “the grocery store” – a place that everyone gravitates too. And Derian’s weighty book will be much loved by anyone who collects his accessories – especially the visual glossary at the back of the book which reveals the artists behind many of these, until now, anonymous works. If you are a fan then next week Derian is in London where he will in conversation with interiors writer Katrina Burroughs at Liberty. Places are very limited and the price of tickets – £15 – is redeemable against the price of Derian’s book on the evening.
