Now that summer has finally launched, we’re on the hunt for a lighter, fresher meal for our lunch. We were therefore thrilled to discover CLAW, a long-term pop up just off Finsbury Square which specialises in sustainable, affordable British seafood. CLAW was set up as a street-side concern in 2015 when Fabian Clark realised that Britain exports 80% of its crab. He sources lobster, crab and crayfish from Salcombe for separate rolls for a fresh and filling lunch. There is also a rather lovely crab and raclette toastie, with dill, chives and parsley which is much lighter than you might imagine. There is some sheltered seating but whilst the weather holds, it’s far more fun to take advantage of the outdoor seating.
If you prefer a sit down lunch with a friend or colleague Tuesday to Friday, we would recommend the new mezze set menu at Morito Hackney Road for £12. As you would expect from Morito, this is not your average mezze – highlights include mixed tomato salad, asparagus with charred sheep’s cheese and lemon zest and labneh with fresh broad beans, pistachios and sundried tomatoes. Alongside this, you can choose a meat, fish or vegetarian option which is included in the price. This could be lamb chops, or cod fillet a la plancha, or even cheese fritters and Cretan thyme honey! Any of these options would be good but we’ll be prescriptive about one aspect of the lunch: you should try a pomegranate juice with lime and soda as an accompaniment.
