For a small but exquisite show, head to see John Gerrard at Thomas Dane. The Irish artist’s installation, Animated Scene, was one of the most talked-about and admired works of art in last year’s Venice Biennale. The exhibition at Thomas Dane shows virtual sculptures of an eery computer-controlled agricultural complex on the great plains of America. What’s a virtual sculpture? Only a realtime 3D projection. You have to see it to get your head round it, but it is intriguing and beautiful – poetic, in fact – as well as hard-hitting (it explores big subjects like the impact of intensive farming on the environment). Another work, Oil Stick Work, from the same series, will also be on show at Canary Wharf Underground Station for a whole year. Go to Gerrard’s website to get a better idea of his work.
