This production of Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons was a huge success last Christmas at Bristol Old Vic, where it was directed by the theatre’s artistic director, Tom Morris (the man behind the seminal War Horse). It broke The Old Vic’s box office records and got great reviews across the board, so it’s bound to be a big hit in London too. Suitable for children from six upwards, the play tells the story of the Walker and Blackett children and their adventures on Wildcat Island, and it has been highly praised for its imaginative and inventive sets, witty and memorable songs (written by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy), and inspired performances. We can’t wait to see it. And how refreshing that this year our Christmas treat with kids will be filled with magic without being Christmas themed. One word of warning though: it’s a short run, only two months long (after which the production goes on tour – dates to be announced on 1 September), so we’re booking right now, and recommend you do the same.
