Kit Kemp, together with her husband Tim, are the co-founders of the Firmdale Hotel group, which owns some of our favourite hotels including The Crosby in New York and The Covent Garden in London. Kit is responsible for the interior design of the hotels, surely one of the main reasons they are so successful and singular. Cosy without being chintzy, grownup but not stuffy, her combination of art, colourful textiles and personal touches (such as the sewing mannequins in some of the rooms, an honesty bar in the sitting rooms) give her and Tim’s hotels a feeling of elegance with a twist of humour. It isn’t really a surprise then to find that in Kit’s newly published interiors book, A Living Space, she encourages readers to ignore all the usual design rules and go for what they love. Alongside many interiors pictures, she reveals her inspirations and tips for room decorating such as playing with scale, colour and pattern.
