Art & Shopping: The Artists of Spitalfields Life

Staffordshire Dogs, by Rob Ryan

As design shops go, architect and interiors guru Ben Pentreath’s in Bloomsbury is one of our favourites: a treasure trove of beautiful finds for the home, from colourful chairs to Chinese teapots. And as inspirational and informative style blogs go, Spitalfields Life by The Gentle Author, is way up there: local history, artist profiles and inventive quirkiness all together in one place.

That the two (along with the shop’s manager Bridie Hall) have collaborated to bring the best of Spitalfields to life, so to speak, in a pre-Christmas pop-up selling exhibition, is great news. Artists whose work will be available to buy include paper-cutting doyen Rob Ryan, interior designer Marianna Kennedy, illustrator Alice Pattullo, architectural historian and drawing fiend Joanna Moore and Whitechapel sculptor Roy Emmins. As each piece is sold, another will spring up in its place in a constantly evolving show that, quite literally, has a life of its own. It also means that you’ll have to keep visiting to see what new design must-haves await.
