For several years now, Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway have been creating vintage extravaganzas in various hip and picturesque locales across the country – from Goodwood to the Royal Festival Hall. They’ve been good fun – I’ve come away from each one with heart-quickeningly chic booty (from a gold polka dot nipped-in-at-the-waist dress to a floor-length, strapless dove-grey-silk Fifties gown), and spirits buoyed by long hours twirling to the big bands, having my hair pinned in super-sexy victory rolls and a heady mix of retro cocktails. This year, the formula has changed once again, and while still on the Southbank, this time the event is happening outside, between Queen’s Walk, Hungerford Bridge and Jubilee Gardens, and is taking the form of a vintage car boot sale.
Over 70 classic cars, from Aston Martin DB4s to VW campervans, will gather to sell vintage fashion, interiors, music and art wares, while food carts including purveyors of artisan sausages Engine, and cocktail connoisseurs Beetle Juice, will provide sustenance for dancing to the retro beats of the Routemester DJ booth. See you there.
