A few years ago there were scant options if you wanted to find proper Italian gelato in London – there was Marine Ices of course, the fabulous Oddano’s and the brilliantly theatrical Morelli’s ice cream parlour at Harrods – now sadly no more. But we quite liked the fact that we would gorge ourselves on cups of nocciola, crema and cioccolato fondente gelato on every trip to Italy with the excuse that you’d never get ice-cream like this back at home. Then suddenly a few years back there was a sudden burst of gelato fever – Gelupo opened up across the street from the wondeful Bocca de Lupo, The Ice-Creamists launched followed by Scoop and Gelateria 3bis in Borough. The latest to join the fold is Snowflake which has recently opened in Wardour Street (the original branch is in Bayswater) and we are already big fans of their almond, cuoricino and fior di latte flavours. In fact we are already planning our next trip as there are tons more flavours that we need to sample. Gelato is made on-site fresh every day with organic Jersey milk, cream and sugar and for summer the store is introducing new seasonsal flavours too including a blood orange sorbet and a tropical Ortinique sorbet. A take-away carton also makes a great pudding if you have friends over for supper and don’t have the time or inclination to cook pudding yourself. Seriously, they will love you for it.
