It’s lovely when a cultural festival is right on your doorstep. And a creatively zingy one at that, which you can dip in and out of as you please, and cream the best bits off the top like a greedy milkmaid. Bringing together leading lights of the creative industries, from TV, theatre and art, to music, food and fashion, the inaugural SohoCreate has an eclectic lineup of conversation-style talks, panel discussions, demonstrations, open houses, parties, drinks and live performances by tastemakers and influencers. The impressive lineup includes restaurateur Mark Hix, jewellery designer Pippa Small, interior designer Ilse Crawford, the original Mad Man Sir John Hegarty (the H of ad agency BBH), chocolatier Paul Young, paper maestro Rob Ryan, artists Michael Craig Martin and Yinka Shonibare, Oscar-winning special effects guru Paul Franklin, and Frieze art founder Matthew Slotover. Amongst a general discussion of what they do, how they do it and why they love it, speakers will also be navigating ponderings such as: Is it more productive to work on your own or as a team? How do you marry something original and interesting with commercial viability? Is blue sky thinking bollocks? Can you teach yourself tricks to find inspiration? The organisers hope it’ll be “funny, moving, intriguing and different”. Go armed with au point questions and we predict you’ll come back inspired. The box office opens on the 14th April, but you can register now on the website to be first in the queue for tickets – fingers at the ready.
