FOOD FESTIVAL AND CHARITY AUCTION
22 May 2014; Auction opens 16 May 2014
With food porn engulfing the nation (one look at our Instagram feeds and, between the cats, babies and sunsets, it’s fighting a good fight as obsession du jour), we like the idea of making at least one celebration of gluttony something a bit more than simple guzzling. Auction Against Hunger (which benefits Action Against Hunger, a charity that raises funds for malnourished children across the world) is taking over Dalston’s Street Feast (an already pretty impressive homing device for under-the-radar, achingly hip, utterly scrumptuous independent foodie producers), with a mouth-tingling amuse bouche of chefs gathered for your gastronomic delectation, including Nuno Mendes, Pascal Aussignac, Francesco Mazzei, Anna Hansen, Jose Pizarro, Dishoom, Neil Rankin and chocolatier Paul A. Young.
Critic Fay Maschler’s son Ben (proprietor of Islington’s The Draper’s Arms, our beloved local haunt), is orgainising the event, now in its third year, which sees the addition to the existing Street Feast of a Tattinger Champagne Bar for the night, live entertainment and complimentary cocktails from Jose Cuervo and the Rotary Bar.
There’ll also be a rather fabulous auction on the night, with prizes including River Café chefs cooking up a feast chez vous; a day in the kitchen with Angela Hartnett at Murano; creating a new Shake Shack frozen yoghurt drink which will make a guest appearance on the menu; dinner with critic Fay Maschler and working with her to write a review for The Evening Standard; a behind-the-scenes tour of The Fat Duck, before enjoying a meal; and Tom Parker Bowles cooking supper for eight in your home. Bidding for the auction starts online from May 16, but tickets are available now and will sell out – so put down the hot cross bun and get clicking.
