The Curious Scrapbook of Josephine Bean

We haven’t had a chance to see The Curious Scrapbook of Josephine Bean  by Scottish puppeteer Shona Reppe  but we have heard great things about this magical and imaginative show that has a new run at the Royal Festival hall over half-term week. Not that the performance actually features puppets – instead Reppe uses objects and a brilliantly clever soundtrack to bring this Victorian mystery to life. She plays Dr Patricia Baker who is a professional “scrapologist” who forensically investigates the contents of old scrapbooks. In this case the story revolves around an old Edinburgh watchmaker Artemis J Mood and his life and loves are pieced together as Baker go through the scrapbook’s contents. In Reppe’s hands the story becomes an engaging and beautiful tale with some shocking twists along the way that will have both adults and children (the show is recommended for aged 7 and over) transfixed.
