We have always been huge fans of the Conran Shop but last year’s overhaul has given it a major reboot. We popped in to the Marylebone High Street store last week and discovered so many inspiring new things and ideas. The addition of a lively café – or Conran Kitchen – on the ground floor (which is now stocked with Peggy Porschen’s delicious layer cakes) has given the Marylebone branch much more life. The store’s brilliant selection of kids’ toys and accessories – always one of our favourite browsing areas at Conran – is right next to the cafe – we loved Francois Lamazerolles’ fabulous tent bed, the super colourful piñata table and the little shed crammed with pocket money toys. The ground floor also houses a vast range of room fragrances and scents too, as well as stationery and – entirely new to us but utterly brilliant – fluro gaffer tape. Upstairs there’s a fabulous utility area packed with ideas for the ultimate laundry room, beautiful dining tables from Found and stunning lighting – including multi-coloured woven lampshades made from recycled Columbian water bottles (also spotted being used to stunning effect in a big cluster at the new Ham Yard hotel) and Maison D’Alep’s stunning hand-blown Tutti Frutti lamp. For the summer season, both the Chelsea and Marylebone stores are celebrating all things French from wicker baskets and gorgeous tableware with a Mediterranean lushness to design classics like the Xavier Pauchard’s metal Tolix A Chair. The room sets should give you all the inspiration you need for dressing summer tables – and on the floor there’s another one of our favourite finds – tiles from Bert & May.
