It’s probably fair to say that some of the very best start-up ideas have sprung from friends chatting over a few drinks. Which is exactly how our favourite new discovery, Artomatic came about. Devised by graphic design graduates and their artist friends, Artomatic began life as a bit of fun; the photobooth may look like any other with a simple chair, privacy curtain and a slot where your final picture is dispensed. But on the other side of the booth rather than a camera there’s an artist and every once in a while they have a quick look through their peep hole. Within a few minutes they have sketched a portrait and posted it through the dispenser. Artomatic was launched at the graphic design festival, Pick Me Up, at Somerset House, earlier this summer and since then has been discovered by the clever team at Selfridges, where it will be in-store this autumn from October. Each portrait will cost £20. But it would make a brilliant addition to any event or wedding – fun, totally original and, we think, a definite talking point.
