Maxine Peake as Hamlet

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Hamlet – which takes place next year (we know!) – was allegedly the fastest selling production in London’s theatre history ever. Anyone who did manage to get tickets, lucky you, but in case you didn’t, there is another Hamlet we are looking forward to with Maxine Peake in the title role. Peake is by no means the first woman to have played Hamlet (actors from the legendary Sarah Bernhardt to Frances de la Tour have also given it a crack) and we’re intrigued to see what this sensitive and brilliant performer will do with the role. Having enjoyed her performances in everything from the comedy Early Doors and grittier TV dramas to Miss Julie on stage, we think her Hamlet sounds worth travelling to Manchester for. Tickets are inevitably selling fast but we’ve heard there is still some availability left, particularly on midweek evenings. Also, a heads up: the best way to secure a seat is by telephone.
