Horst: Photographer of Style at the V&A

Marlene Dietrich, New York, 1942 ©Condenast/Horst Estate

If you don’t recognise the name Horst, you’ll definitely know his work.  One of the leading photographers of the twentieth century, he shot 94 Vogue covers and his subjects included everyone from Marlene Dietrich to Salvador Dali.  This is a rich, gorgeous, all encompassing show and you really get a great overview of his opus – from the famous Mainbocher Corset shot (the original is shown alongside the one published in Vogue, retouched to make the corset fit the model’s body and not loose as in Horst’s preferred, more seductive shot) to his portraits of Hollywood stars such as Vivien Leigh, Rita Hayworth and Bette Davis and all 94 of those Vogue covers.  Some of our favourite prints, however, are from Horst’s travels in the 1940s and 50s to the Middle East and his studies of natural forms such as flowers, shells and butterfly wings: beautiful, almost haunting images of lost ruins and intricate patterns.
