We don’t often find ourselves in Harrods but we were once regulars when Morelli’s ice cream parlour took up a sizeable plot by the Hans Road entrance. We would pop in for the seriously good caramel sundaes and watch the frenetic bustling crowds or listen to the equally entertaining opera-singing pizza chef in the café next door. But then Morelli’s in London was no more, when Harrods decided to open its own parlour. Well now there’s great news as the Italian ice-creamists, who have had a shop in the seaside resort of Broadstairs since 1932, have opened their own space in Covent Garden. You can sit with just a single scoop of their excellent freshly made gelato – or opt for a full-on retro sundae although be warned you need a major appetite to polish off a whole sundae on your own. There are typically Italian versions like the delicious nutty Bacio as well as twists on Brit classics like the Banana Split. The cheery cafe has brought a little bit of the seaside to WC2, even if, for now, it is bordering on sub-zero outside.
