One of our favourite things to do with any precious free time is to spend a few hours learning new skills or honing rusty ones in a workshop and lately we’ve been indulging that obsession with the brilliant spring courses on offer at Petersham Nurseries. The newly launched School of Garden Inspiration covers many of the things that the Nurseries is famous for – its beautiful potting style, wild flowers, cutting and veg gardens. So far we’ve done an excellent rose course and left feeling incredibly knowledgable about pruning, planting and care thanks to the illuminating talk given by Martin Ogden. As well as a workshop in planning and planting a vegetable garden which cleverly catered to all-comers from novices with a small plot to more ambitious allotment gardeners.
There are day long courses too including The Ultimate Cutting Garden workshop which includes lunch as well as seed trays and flowers to take home (there’s one next Tuesday but another on 22nd September too). At other nurseries and well-known gardens, courses can sometimes be prohibitively expensive – but a couple of hours at Petersham with some really experienced experts is only £15 – which means you could – if you felt inclined – treat yourself to lunch at the fabulous Petersham Nurseries Café, or in the very good Teahouse. And how could you not?
