Vogue Essentials: Lingerie

Corinne Day

Did you know that images of lingerie have been shown in British Vogue since it’s launch in 1916 and in the 20s and 30s, entire issues were devoted to the subject?  Written by Anna Cryer (former Executive Fashion Editor at Vogue and colleague), Vogue Essentials: Lingerie is a fascinating look at the evolution of lingerie over the last 100 plus years.  Accompanied by more than 100 images from the Vogue archive, it follows the progress of female emancipation through the technological advancements (hello lycra) and changing fashion silhouettes of the times.  The pictures are gorgeous, from Kylie in a pink Stella McCartney corset to pouting 80s supermodels Karen Mulder and Helena Christensen and drawings of a young Paloma Picasso. From leather to lace, from La Perla to Agent Provocateur. Definitely not just a coffee table book, though, this is a brilliant read too.  (And if this sounds appealing, don’t miss Vogue Essentials: Heels by Gail Rolfe also published this month.)
