Finding calm with Yoga Nidra

For anyone who has trouble getting to sleep or getting out of bed on these dark January mornings, might we suggest the new Yoga Nidra recordings from Dr Kiki Morris. Rather like a guided meditation, you simply lie in shavasana covered with a blanket – or lie in bed under the duvet – and listen as Kiki’s soothing voice guides you to relaxation. Yoga Nidra was mentioned in the Mahabharata, an epic Indian poem in the 4th century BC where it’s described as ‘the deep sleep under the spell of spiritual meditation.’ In the 20th century it was adapted and developed by Swami Satyananda for a modern audience and is now used successfully by the US military to treat their soldiers for post traumatic stress disorder. Kiki, founder of Primrose Hill Yoga School rates it so highly that she uses it at the end of every class she teaches. So far we’ve tried the sleep practice and unusually, sailed away straight to sleep afterwards. The daytime practice will soothe tension, increase productivity, creativity and focus. Becalmed is available to download via iTunes now.
