A Little Bird - An Insider's Guide to London

Start the year with a new skill. These creative courses are the perfect way to fill your winter weekends.

Quilt-Making with Lucy Strawson

FELT’s first workshop is a beautiful quilt-making weekend with expert Lucy Strawson. Held over two days you’ll learn how to use naturally-dyed fabrics to transform into a quilt to take home. You’re invited to bring along off-cuts of any fabrics that you might have tucked away at home to incorporate into your design. 29-30 January, at Late Afternoon in Peckham.

Calligraphy with Kate Ridyard

Kate has the most lovely, soothing manner making these calligraphy workshops a kind of creative therapy. Sign up to a six-week course and develop your writing into something beautiful with calligraphic pen, nib, ink and guide sheets included. Bring along your own project to work on – it could be a family tree, a poem, a special invitation or birthday card. Starting 1st February, Tuesdays 10.30am-1pm at No.11 Kitchen in Richmond.

Curtain-making with Gemma Moulton of East London Cloth

We love East London’s Cloth and feel hugely excited about Create Academy’s new online course with founder, Gemma Moulton. Learn how to make beautiful curtains over 5 hours of lessons – with pencil pleat, rod pocket, lined curtains and a valance all included. You’ll also learn how to make her coveted frilly cushions. Use the code LITTLEBIRD15 for 15% off.

Pasta Masterclasses at Petersham Nurseries

There are two camps in January – virtuous and less virtuous. Those in the former category will be interested in Petersham’s new series on Gut Health that includes a breath-work retreat and a Sound and Cocoa workshop at Petersham House in Richmond. For those in the latter camp, there are a series of evening pasta masterclasses at La Goccia in Covent Garden. Running from 7-8.30pm spend an evening learning to make fresh pasta whilst sipping on a glass of wine along with focaccia and olives.

Gathered Lampshade 2-day Course with Minerva Workshop

Bring along your own lawn cotton fabric of choice and learn how to make a gathered lampshade to a professional standard at this 2-day course with Minerva. The class requires a lot of hand sewing – but you don’t need masses of experience before-hand. 19 March in Kentish Town.
