January is here, one of the few months where we feel we actually have a bit of extra time on our hands. It’s a good moment then, to go through our wardrobes and have a clear out. For items along the way that need a spruce up, here’s where we send them.
Though not cheap, The Restory works wonders on designer clothes, shoes and bags. Within London they will come and collect items from your front door – or you can drop them off at Harrods or Harvey Nichols. Their services cover everything from darning moth holes to deep cleaning leather handbags and dying stilettoes. We’d use them for something ambitious, where you have a beloved item that needs reinvention. Watching these Manolo Blahnik heels transform from champagne to black is mesmerising, and what a result!
Sew London is one step up from going to your local dry cleaner – get your hems adjusted, have clothes altered and even have curtains made, all with free collection and delivery within London. We’ve tried and tested the Maida Vale location and it’s a trusted go-to for simple alterations.
This place in Camden has been around forever. Specialising in shoe repairs they can transform winter boots with Danite Rubber resoling, replace insoles, fix heels and toes and stretch tight-fitting shoes. They also do handbags – we’ve had one repaired there and were very happy with it. A family business, their experience means you can take in almost anything and they can advise.
We’ve used Clothes Doctor to mend holes in cashmere jumpers – the mail-in service is so easy, and they do a very good job. You can also add the option of an anti-moth treatment so that after repairing the holes, the jumper is put into a special industrial freezer and then returned in a sealed bag for storage so you know you’ve properly tackled the problem. As well as repairs, they also stock eco laundry detergents and have lots of useful free DIY mending tutorials on their website.
Luxury handbag specialists, you can not only use this platform to clean and repair your designer bags, but you can also buy second hand handbags at up to 50% off their original RRP. Unlike buying from other pre-loved sites, they arrive pristine and clean and feel nearly new. You can also sell your old handbags and earn 80% of the selling price. The repair service can be accessed anywhere by mail order or through their Kings Road shop.
