Many of us have good intentions when it comes to our food shopping; buying local, going to the farmer’s market, choosing organic etc. However, it can be hard to get the boring essentials without going to the supermarket. Enter Per Diem, the new ‘capsule pantry’ company that specialise in exactly those boring products, done very well. Their own-brand products offer an eco-solution to the top 50 essential household items – all sourced from small independent suppliers or co-operatives. Think pasta, granola, raisins, washing up liquid, loo roll, everyday olive oil, flour, sugar and dishwasher tablets plus a surprise item every month.
The prices are reasonable – the only thing that seems on the steeper side are the coffee capsules which are 50p each (rather than 35p at the supermarket) but this is because the coffee comes from a small roaster in Northumberland and the capsules are fully compostable. Indeed, all their packaging is sustainable, and you can even top up with the packaging-free refill service. We love the level of thought that has gone into every item – often things we don’t really have the energy to think about ourselves and default to buying from bigger brands on repeat. With Per Diem, everything arrives in monthly batches so once you’ve set up your order you don’t need to think about it again. A very welcome new addition and all delivered via bike, foot or electric car – for just £3 during the current launch.
