The Petersham, Floral Court

We’ve been longingly glancing into Floral Court tucked away behind Petersham Nurseries Covent Garden, ever since the store and deli opened last summer. And finally two restaurants La Goccia and The Petersham, which sit either side of a beautiful lush courtyard dotted with trees, pleached magnolias and flowering shrubs, have opened. It’s at the latter where the more formal dining takes place with the pretty-as-a-picture plates that visitors to the original Petersham Café will already be well acquainted with.

The starters we tried were light and bursting with spring flavours – a quinoa, lovage and pea crostata (which also won the most Instagrammable dish prize) was as delicious as the crunchy fresh peas and pea shoots that they were served on. We ordered a deliciously tangy carnaroli risotto with asparagus and parmesan which was, just as expected, a pitch perfect mix of al dente asparagus and a creamy and rich risotto. Mains are expensive – £28 for a roast Haye Farm chicken with an unctuous Mayan gold puree and morels – especially given that portions are not particularly large but on balance with a rich jus and such piquant flavours, a more modest serving is probably about right. The puddings here – just as in the Richmond site – are sublime. We tried a melt in the mouth baked cheese-cake and an otherworldly duo of rich chocolate and Zisola olive oil ice creams with crushed honeycomb.

Credit: Paul Craig

On a chilly evening we were happy to be cosy inside but The Petersham – along with neighbouring La Goccia – will come into its own in the summer when food can be eaten outside in the stunning courtyard. We’ll be back in June.

Anti-Pollution Skincare

Mayor Sadiq Khan might be pushing pollution to the top of the agenda, but there are still dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide in London’s air. The dirty particles emitted from diesel cars and vans not only harm our lungs but also wreak havoc with our skin, with pollutants blocking pores and prompting early ageing. These skincare products offer much-needed anti-pollution protection:

REN’s Flash Defence Anti-Pollution Mist

This superstar product is naturally derived from plants making it safe to use on all skin types. It sprays as a fine mist that forms an invisible non-sticky layer over the skin that traps out pollution. The benefit of this spray is that it works instantly and can even be applied over make up. Keep it in your handbag and spritz before your commute home. £24 renskincare.com

Dr Barbara Sturm’s Anti-Pollution Drops

These drops – with a texture like a serum – are not only ultra-moisturising and full of antioxidants but they also protect skin against blue light emitted by our screens. So-called ‘digital ageing’ is combatted with an active ingredient obtained from cocoa seeds. The hefty price tag is worth it – you only need a tiny amount each day. £105 cultbeauty.co.uk

This Works Three-Step Evening Detox

Hooked on This Works Sleep Spray, we’re hugely excited to try this brand new three-step anti-pollution skincare. Designed to be used in the evening after a day out and about in the city, the Cleansing Water decongests the skin and gently removes dirt and pollution, whilst the leave-on spray contains anti-inflammatory Witch Hazel and exfoliating Salicylic Acid. The purifying mask provides a deeper 10-minute detox with Malachite & Kaolin clay. Trio on introductory offer at £57.40 (usually £82)  thisworks.com

Caudalie Overnight Vine Activ Detox Oil

This overnight elixir is a natural blend of five essential oils and three vegetal oils that combats stress, pollution, UVs and free radicals. It’s especially good on fine lines, sinking in overnight and leaving skin plumped and healthy by morning, and it also smells lovely. £30 johnlewis.com

Glossier’s Invisible Shield

Despite knowing we ought to wear an SPF every day, suncream can be so unpleasant and greasy that it’s something we dread applying. This water gel is very light and protects against the sun with SPF30 and also against pollution with a fermented yeast and vegetal extract that create a breathable ‘invisible shield’. You won’t even notice you’re wearing it. £20 glossier.com

Giles Deacon’s Fashioned from Nature Talk at the V&A

Illuminated by extraordinary garments from 1600 to the present day, the V&A’s new Fashioned From Nature exhibition explores fashion’s complex relationship with the natural world. The industry has always drawn inspiration from the power, beauty and fragility of nature, yet paradoxically its processes and constant demand for raw materials often damage the environment it seeks to celebrate.

A remarkable muslin dress from the 1860s is a case in point. It is beautiful at a distance, shimmering with iridescent green embroidery, but on closer inspection proves, to the contemporary eye, macabre, covered in the wing cases of hundreds of jewelled beetles. In 1867, 25,000 beetle wing cases were imported to London in a single consignment to satiate this popular trend. The Victorians’ use of insects, birds and animals to embellish their apparel drove many species to the edge of extinction. It is fascinating to see literature from early animal rights campaigners such as The Humanitarian League, who operated between 1891 and 1919, exhibited alongside these once fashionable garments.

Today sustainability remains a challenge; consumerism and fast fashion have a growing impact on the world around us and many industry leaders are looking to develop a more responsible fashion cycle. Current designers stepping up to the plate are displayed here, from Calvin Klein, whose look made entirely of recycled plastic bottles was worn by Emma Watson to the Met gala, to H&M with their Conscious collection.

Best Gifts for Newborn Babies

With the arrival of a new royal prince on Monday, we’re all thinking about babies. Knowing what to give a newborn can be a challenge – especially if you don’t have children yourself. Here new mother Chiara Allsup shares the gifts she’d put at the top of her wish-list:

Kissy Kissy Pima Cotton Babysuit Set

Many designer children’s clothes – however sweet they are – are too difficult to get on a newborn. When they’re wriggling and screaming a babygrow is the easiest thing to get on. This sleep suit has poppers between the legs and can go in the washing machine but it’s also pretty and smart enough for visitors. Plus Kissy Kissy makes the softest cotton ever.

£49, childrensalon.com

Cologne and Cotton Jacquard Cot Covers

These cot covers are beautifuly jacquard woven and look much more expensive than they are. The soft, charming and playful designs would suit every nursery.

£21 cologneandcotton.com

Flensted Mobile Danish Lucky Storks

A mobile is an essential for the nursery – hang it over the changing table to distract baby and avoid tantrums. Christian Flensted’s super stylish Scandi mobiles were designed in the 1950’s, and there are lots of styles to choose from. The classic and neutral ‘Lucky Storks’ would make a particularly lovely newborn gift, and our baby loves ‘Giraffes on the Savannah’.

From £11.50 scandinavianshop.co.uk

Heimess Dancing Ducks Gym

Jungle gyms made from plastic tend to lean towards the garish side. Heritage German brand Heimess sells gorgeous wooden toys for babies, like this Dancing Ducks Gym that uses bright primary colours, simple shapes and bells and rattles. It’s well made and the chic design isn’t an eyesore on the sitting room floor.

Home Cooking

The ultimate gift you can give the parents of newborns is food – best of all make them something yourself. Failing that a delivery from Potage is most welcome, as well as the proper homemade meals like spag bol, their snack size fruit salad pots and mini chocolate brownies are ideal for a mid-feed sugar kick. A Cook voucher is also great and their delicious meals are a lifesaver to have stocked in the freezer. Cosy comfort food that’s easy to prepare is what’s needed in the initial weeks.

Kiki Morriss, Founder of Primrose Hill Yoga

Trained doctor and experienced yoga teacher Kiki Morriss runs Primrose Hill Yoga from the top floor of her family home. A tranquil and light-filled studio – designed by Kiki’s architect husband – provides the ideal setting for her hugely popular spiritual practise that counts Mimi Holliday amongst fans. With three young children Kiki is passionate about the benefits of starting young and she not only runs family classes but is currently writing a book, Yoga for Children. Here she shares her London highlights:

Do you practice every day?  What’s your favourite pose?

I practice every day in my home yoga studio and once a week I take a class at Sangyé Yoga School on Kensal Road.  My favourite pose is the headstand.  It makes me feel quiet and peaceful.  Apparently when I was a child my parents used to wake up in the morning and find me doing a headstand at the bottom of their bed!

How important is it to go to a class versus practising yoga at home?

If you are new to yoga, I would advise you to try out a few classes and find a teacher that resonates with you.  A good teacher will guide you on how to listen to your body and your breath. Then you can start to develop your own home practice. Many people find it hard to motivate themselves at home but if you can discipline yourself to make it a part of your every day routine, even if it’s only for 5 minutes, it will transform your life.

www.vanessaberberian.com

How do you encourage your kids to get into yoga?

I try to make yoga as playful as possible for the kids and never force them to practise.  We often practise outdoors, so if we are in the woods we will do Tree pose or if we are by the sea we will do Boat pose.  The children see my practice and that makes them want to join in.

Do you have any tips for staying focused in a very full yoga class?

Every time you are distracted in a yoga class you can make a choice.  You choose either to get caught up by the distraction or you choose to return to an awareness of your own body and breath.  This is the essence of a yoga practice, cultivating the ability to draw your focus inwards, to listen to your body and your breath, to experience the space between your thoughts and the bliss of your true nature.

What do you like about living in Primrose Hill?

Primrose Hill is easy to fall in love with.  It has a relaxed village feel and a strong, supportive community, despite its proximity to central London.  There are beautiful pastel coloured townhouses and the view of London from the top of the grassy hill is second to none.  We love Oka for sushi, Chalcot Square for family picnics, Sew Much Fun for creative sewing classes and the Primrose Bakery for delicious cupcakes.

Where do you buy your gym wear/yoga kit?

Wellicious make eco-friendly yoga wear and active wear. They use ethically sourced, organic, biodegradable materials and environmentally friendly production processes.

Do you have a favourite London park?

My favourite London park is Hampstead Heath, a rural escape from the hustle and bustle of London with its rolling woodlands, hills and meadows.  I particularly love the serene and secluded bathing ponds where you can swim all year round surrounded by trees and wildlife.

Which recipe book are you enjoying at the moment?

I love the simple, natural and delicious recipes in Breakfast Lunch Tea from the legendary Rose Bakery.  My favourite recipe is baked rhubarb and orange with crème anglaise.

Favourite app?

I’m sorry I don’t have a favourite one!  I use my mobile phone as little as I have to.

And finally, what saying or phrase motivates you?

‘Do not kill the instinct of the body for the glory of the pose.  Do not look at your body like a stranger, but adopt a friendly approach towards it. Watch it, listen to it, observe its needs, its requests, and even have fun.  To be sensitive is to be alive.’  Vanda Scaravelli

Rye Rick-Rack Bikinis

‘Life, sunny side up’ is the motto at cult Aussie swimwear brand, Rye where colourful shapes, zingy colours and wonderfully-named swimsuits are the name of the game. This playful HOOT two-piece has whizzed right at the top of our summer shopping list. Blame it on Matilda Goad but we’re mad for a scallop trim, and this design brings rick-rack to the bikini.

With a choice of kaleidoscope colour-ways and low or high-waisted bottoms, the swimwear is available in the UK at Selfridges or net-a-porter. Made by Bondi-beach natives, these are properly made bikinis won’t come off in the waves, and what’s more you can mix and match the tops and bottoms. We also love the polka dot rick-rack Sandy style.

Cedric Morris Lectures at The Garden Museum

The arrival of sunshine at last seems very fitting for the opening this week of Cedric Morris: Artist Plantsman at the Garden Museum. Uplifting flower paintings based upon his garden at Benton End in Suffolk are on display alongside still-lifes and landscapes at this small exhibition. A devoted plantsman as well as a painter, Morris cultivated over 90 varieties of Iris at the home he shared with partner, Arthur Lett-Haines. The pair founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing where Lucian Freud trained and later Maggi Hambling. Cedric Morris is often overlooked in favour of his peers, Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Paul Nash and Christopher Wood but that’s set to be re-addressed with this exhibition and the concurrent, Cedric Morris: Beyond the Garden Wall at the Philip Mould & Company Pall Mall gallery.

Book now for the Garden Museum’s series of lectures that run alongside the exhibitions:

The Cedric Morris Lectures: Discovering Cedric Morris with Philip Mould OBE

Philip Mould, art dealer, broadcaster, and writer will give a personal account of how he ‘discovered’ Cedric Morris and the reasons for his attachment to him as a painter and naturalist.

Tuesday 1st May, 7-8.30pm

The Cedric Morris Lectures: Irises, Gardening and Friends

Sarah Cook, former Head Gardener at Sissinghurst and Biologist Clive Lundquist, will be discussing Cedric Morris through his work as a plantsman and an artist, and what we can learn about Morris from this.

Tuesday 8th May, 7-8.30pm

The Cedric Morris Lectures: Reflections and Reminiscences

An evening of reminiscences of Cedric Morris from those who knew him, including friends such as Lady Wakefield who knew Morris from when she was a child and her mother was part of the Benton End circle, Celia Lyttelton journalist, currently writing a biography of Cedric Morris and Richard Morphet who curated a retrospective of Morris’ work at Tate in 1984.

Tuesday 5th June, 7-8.30pm

The Cedric Morris Lectures: Plant: Exploring the botanical world through art

Image: Easter Bouquet, 1934, Sir Cedric Morris, © Philip Mould & Company, Cedric Morris Estate

Jamie Compton shows how important botanical art has been to humanity over the centuries, using a set of images to demonstrate this. In the past identification of plants often included images that enabled people to distinguish between edible and poisonous plants. The illustrative process was immensely revolutionised by the printing process in the 15thcentury. The tools we have available to us today, however, are beyond the wildest dreams of our ancestors and make accuracy in identification of plants so much more reliable.

Phoebe Philo’s favourite candle

A year ago, whilst visiting the Celine shop on Mount Street, although the leather bags and clothes caught our eye, it was the amazing smell that really got our attention.  When we asked the doorman what the scent was, he pointed to a Cire Trudon candle burning beside him and said it was ‘Josephine, Phoebe Philo’s favourite candle’.  Combining the sweet scents of roses, jasmine, camelias and irises, apparently the favourite flowers of Napoleon’s first wife, a passionate botanist, it’s a very romantic heady smell that’s floral but not over sweet.  If you’re not familiar with Cire Trudon, it’s the oldest candlemaker in the world still active today that was founded in 1643 and the official candle supplier to the French Court including Napoleon.  It’s a gorgeous candle with a fascinating history that we’ve now had happily burning on our own desk ever since.

It’s goodbye for now…
