New Audio Books to listen to now

We’re swapping podcasts for audiobooks this January. These are our favourite new listens:

Anne Glenconner, Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown

If you caught Lady Anne Glenconner on Graham Norton recounting her honeymoon in Paris (via a down-at-heel brothel) to the shocked delight of Olivia Colman, then you’ll know just what a wonderful storyteller she is. More of the same in this hugely entertaining memoir made even more appealing for being read aloud by Lady Glenconner herself in a distinctively grand drawl. We’re swept from a seemingly idyllic childhood at Holkham Hall – where Anne and her sister Carey would play in the attic making dens out of Old Master paintings deemed too louche to be hung on the walls – picnicking on the beach and eating boiled eggs for tea, perfectly cooked in a bain-marie in the time taken to walk from kitchen to nursery, so large was the house. From there to London and life as a debs delight, swirling around ballrooms and swerving the handsy NSIT’s (not safe in taxi’s) and the start of life as a royal aide as Maid of Honour at the Queen’s coronation in 1953. Later, as portrayed in The Crown season 3, she was to play Lady in Waiting to Princess Margaret to whom she remains loyal to throughout, talking fondly of her hoots of laughter and their travels together. The role offered respite from a testing family life with three sons struck by tragedy and a colourful marriage to the wild and wayward Colin Tennant, Lord Glenconner, a character so reckless he bought the island of Mustique without ever having stepped foot on it and later left his fortune to his manservant, Kent. A stiff upper lip and a ‘just get on with it’ attitude keeps the spirited Anne Glenconner marching onwards through the extraordinary events of her life, that really do make for an excellent story. £10.99 books.apple.com

Anne Patchett’s The Dutch House narrated by Tom Hanks

Post-war Philadelphia and Cyril Conroy is on the up. Acquiring The Dutch House – so-called not because of its architecture but thanks to its previous inhabitants, the Van Hoebeeks, now bankrupt – the family move from a ‘postage-stamp’ sized rental to the grandeur of a suburban home complete with deep peony beds and a wide lawn. Amongst all the Van Hoebeeks furniture and paintings things begin to unravel; Cyril and Elna’s marriage falls apart and the entrance of a chilly stepmother spells trouble for siblings Maeve and Danny. Fans of Patchett’s clear, confident prose won’t be disappointed by Tom Hanks’ rendering of this grown up fairytale. Narrating through the eyes of Danny across five decades he manages to achieve a child-like lightness as well as soft restraint that strikes just the right tone for the story. £18.99 audible.co.uk

Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women narrated by Laura Dern

We’re all mad for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. For those wanting more, Laura Dern (who plays Marmee in the film) narrates the book along with a full cast in this new recording from audible. Listen to Louisa May Alcott’s story and you’ll spot all the genius ways that Gerwig’s adaption adjusts the characters for current times. For example, Jo’s match, Friedrich Bhae is described as ‘rather stout’ and ‘plain and odd’ in the book, and he’s also middle aged. Casting Louis Garrel in the role presents an altogether more attractive proposition; hurrah for Jo who gets to have it all, her writing career as well as true love. Similarly, we notice the nuance brought to Amy, a somewhat spoiled and churlish character in the book. The last minute addition of Amy’s speech to Laurie about marriage as an economic proposition was something Meryl Streep supposedly nudged Gerwig to include, allowing us to understand Amy’s motives for marriage and letting us sympathise with her in a way we hadn’t previously. Louisa May Alcott’s original text is told chronologically as the girls grow into women, unlike the choppy film. It’s charming and heart-warming and perfect January listening. £19.99 amazon.co.uk

Finding calm with Yoga Nidra

For anyone who has trouble getting to sleep or getting out of bed on these dark January mornings, might we suggest the new Yoga Nidra recordings from Dr Kiki Morris. Rather like a guided meditation, you simply lie in shavasana covered with a blanket – or lie in bed under the duvet – and listen as Kiki’s soothing voice guides you to relaxation. Yoga Nidra was mentioned in the Mahabharata, an epic Indian poem in the 4th century BC where it’s described as ‘the deep sleep under the spell of spiritual meditation.’ In the 20th century it was adapted and developed by Swami Satyananda for a modern audience and is now used successfully by the US military to treat their soldiers for post traumatic stress disorder. Kiki, founder of Primrose Hill Yoga School rates it so highly that she uses it at the end of every class she teaches. So far we’ve tried the sleep practice and unusually, sailed away straight to sleep afterwards. The daytime practice will soothe tension, increase productivity, creativity and focus. Becalmed is available to download via iTunes now.

What we’re REALLY looking forward to in 2020

It’s January and our inboxes are full of diet recommendations.  We’re ditching the resolutions (which we were never going to keep anyway) – here’s what we are really going to get up to in 2020.

First up, we will be watching Season 2 of Sex Education (Netflix 17 January) which was one of our top tv shows of last year – if you haven’t watched Season 1, then catch up quickly!  In the summer, we’re looking forward to the tv adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People which will be a 12-part drama on BBC3. We will be booking in to eat at the new fish restaurant Manzi in Soho from uber-restauranters Corbin & King (opening Spring) and wandering around London’s first Eataly in Bishopsgate which will have 40,000 square meters of shops, cafes, restaurants and a cookery school (opening summer).  It’s the 35th outpost from the Italian gourmet Eataly and about time too!  The V&A has been putting on some sterling shows in the last few years and their offering of Alice in Wonderland (27 June – 10 January 2021) seems no exception.  Our interest is also piqued by the Marina Abramovic show at the Royal Academy (26 September – 8 December) which is rumoured to reintroduce her infamous entrance through a barrage of naked people.  And we will be taking the kids to see Fantastic Beasts: The Wonder of Nature at The Natural History Museum in the Spring, which will show Harry Potter fictional artefacts alongside real biological wonders. We’ll be reading Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld – we loved her book about Laura Bush and this looks at what might have happened to Hilary Rodham Clinton if she had never married Bill.  The last in Hilary Mantel’s trilogy about Thomas Cromwell, The Mirror and The Light is out March 5th and Elena Ferrante has a new book set in Naples out June 9th called The Lying Life of Adults.  At the cinema, we are definitely going to catch the new adaption of Jane Austen’s Emma (14 February), Steven Spielberg’s new version of West Side Story (18 December), Wes Anderson’s latest The French Dispatch starring Frances McDormand, Owen Wilson, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet and Kate Winslet (autumn 2020) and On the Rocks by Sofia Coppola starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones (Apple TV, end of 2020), Finally, we’ve already got our tickets to see Eileen Atkins play opposite Timothée Chalamet in 4,000 Miles at the Old Vic and To Kill a Mockingbird adapted by Aaron Sorkin and starring Rhys Ifans. We can’t wait!

Lina Stores, Kings Cross

Lina Stores was one of the first Italian delis to open in Soho in 1944. 75 years later, they have just opened their second restaurant in King’s Cross, following hard on the heels of the Soho restaurant – in Greek Street – which opened last year. The chef is Umbrian Masha Rener. The King’s Cross branch is an all day restaurant, decked out in the familiar Lina Stores eau de nil.

At lunch, we start with an Amaro Sour which has an enjoyable bitter orange flavour and a non-alcoholic Nogroni, made with Seedlip Spice 94, alongside deliciously fat aubergine polpette.  Two small pasta dishes are next: 30-Egg Yolk Tagliolini, with parmesan and black truffle (and those 30 yolks are pleasingly evident in the richness of the pasta) and crab and scallop rondini, with confit cherry tomatoes. These plump parcels are expertly judged but there are only four of them – you might need some steering from your waiter if you’re (understandably in Britain) accustomed to thinking of pasta as a main course. We then have enormous king prawns and a separate, roasted fennel dish which is slightly overwhelmed by the confit lemon it’s served with. There are exemplary sorbets for dessert and a tiramisu ice cream sandwich which will either have you wondering why you’ve never eaten one before or make you shake your head that they have dared tamper with a classic. Whatever your feelings about tiramisu, Lina Stores King’s Cross is a calm, comforting restaurant in a beautiful room that manages to be cosy and glamorous at the same time.

Gift Guide: Artworks under £100

Is there any present more welcome than a picture or work of art? Here are some beautiful things that won’t break the bank:

Dora Maar Untitled (fashion photograph) framed postcard, £30 Tate

We were captivated by this exhibition at the Tate Modern (on until 15 March 2020). Take a little piece of Maar home with you with this framed postcard, the exhibition’s poster cover image of the hand emerging from the shell is also available in this format.

Things to print and put in frames via House & Garden, free

We love this idea from House & Garden – download artworks like these pretty Susannah Garrod flower illustrations directly from the House & Garden website, print out and frame as you like. An affordable way to begin a collection, or way to fill a loved frame.

Alice Pattullo, Apotropaic Devices, print £100

This is the picture for anyone needing to ward off evil and bring good luck to their household. A swallows nest, lucky horseshoes and strung hag stones are amongst the good omens depicted here bringing a good turn of fortune to the house. Print only £100, or framed £185 at Picture, Shepherds Bush.

River Song, handpainted votive holders by Luis Romero, £50 at Caramel

These votive holders are exquisite. Made by artist, Luis Romero using acrylic paint on papel amate (Mexican bark paper) surrounding a glass votive holder, choose from three designs – our favourite is this gentle, smiling donkey – not just for Christmas.

Charlie Mackesy prints, £70

If you haven’t yet got a copy of Charlie Mackesy’s book, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse, what are you waiting for? It would make a brilliant gift for anyone of any age, or even for yourself. And now you can buy your favourite page as a print. We particularly like this one, The greatest illusion is that life should be perfect, with the words from the artist underneath ‘my dog walked on the drawing – clearly trying to make the point.’ Order by 16 December for Christmas delivery.

Julianna Byrne’s ceramic baubles, £30 at Partnership Editions

After eyeing Julianna Byrne’s beautiful gouache paintings all year, we’re delighted that she’s created these ceramic baubles at a snip of the price. Available exclusively at the Partnership Editions pop up in Islington Square, we like the sun and moon best of all.

Tatiana Alida, ‘What are you looking at?’ signed print, £95 at Doms.art

We love the sassy expression of this woman with her leopard bow – an original edition work of 25, A3 print on A2 paper. Find Tatiana Alida and many more contemporary young artists represented by Domenica Marland at Doms.art. If budget allows we also love Francesca Colussi’s stitched vintage photographs.

Icon giclee prints by Fee Greening, £95

Iconic figures from Beyonce to Anne Boleyn, Nick Cave to Shakespeare are deftly captured by Fee Greening’s quill and ink. Show your devotion and build up a collection. Each is in an edition of 50, with originals available on request.

You are so loved A4 prints by Annabel Dover, £30

A glance at this would cheer up anyone’s day. The limited edition signed A4 giclee prints are £30 each with proceeds going towards the Oasis Project. To order email annabeldover@gmail.com, delivery available pre-Christmas.

Assorted framed oil paintings at Tat London

Breaking our own rules, you won’t find artworks under £100 at Tat, except for these rather beautiful antique hand painted fabric designs (£45). However, you will find a selection of framed oil paintings priced from £160 and upwards, which still strike us as rather good value.

Bags: Inside Out at the V&A

Exciting news just in from the V&A. Opening next spring, Bags: Inside Out will be a major exhibition of over 300 wonderful bags from tiny drawstring purses to luggage trunks. Sponsored by Mulberry the show will include a large embroidered burse used to protect the silver matrix of Elizabeth I’s Great Seal of England, a gas mask bag owned by HRH Queen Mary during the Second World War and Winston Churchill’s red despatch box. And there will be iconic designer handbags on display too including the Hermès ‘Kelly’ bag, named in honour of Grace Kelly, Dior’s ‘Princess Dior’ bag designed for Princess Diana and Carrie Bradshaw’s Fendi ‘baguette’ bag made famous via Sex and the City. We can’t wait!

It’s goodbye for now…

The team at A Little Bird are taking a break to recharge and make some exciting changes behind-the-scenes. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
