Rita Konig’s farmhouse for rent

Even looking at the pictures brings us joy so we can’t imagine how happy-making it would be to wake up at Rita Konig’s North Farm. Book it for Christmas or New Year (it’s just come up for rent but you’ll need to be quick!) and you could have a very merry house party of friends to fill the 7/8 bedrooms. Surrounded by 380 acres of countryside near Darlington, return from wintery walks to snug sitting rooms with plump cushions, and baths with views and plenty of hot water to go round. It’s yours for £4,500 per week over Christmas and New Year, or from £2,500 a week at other times.

Book now: Uncle Vanya starring Richard Armitage

Sonia Friedman Productions recently announced yet another hit-in-the-making production:  Conor McPherson’s (The Weir, Girl from the North Country) new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece Uncle Vanya directed by Ian Rickson (Jerusalem, The Seagull) will run at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 14th January 2020.  It’s the first time Rickson has returned to Chekhov since his award winning production of The Seagull in 2007 and it will star Toby Jones, Richard Armitage, Aimee Lou Wood (from Sex Education) and Ciarán Hinds.  Running until 2 May 2020, you can book tickets here.

Firmdale Hotels’ Book Salon with Rosie Price

Tipped as one of the Observer’s ‘Hottest Debut Novelists of 2019’, Rosie Price will be speaking about her bestselling novel, What Red Was at The Soho Hotel on 18th November. The book is a story of modern love, as well as offering a nuanced exploration of the complexities of sexual violence, the consequences of trauma, silence and toxic inheritance. Hear Price discuss these topics as well as signing books at the evening event in the cosy library at the Soho Hotel.  The talk is part of the Firmdale Hotel group’s Book Salon, a series of intimate talks with literary figures (past speakers have included William Boyd, Adam Kay and Kassia St Clair). We have a pair of tickets to the event to give away to A Little Bird readers via the competition form below. And for anyone who’s not a lucky winner, you can book your tickets here.

Wild by Tart opens in Eccleston Yards

We’ve been waiting with anticipation for the opening of Wild by Tart, the new all-day restaurant from Lucy Carr-Ellison and Jemima Jones. As fans of their weekly food column in ES magazine (sadly no more) and their cookbook, A Love of Eating we were delighted to hear news that they were to open a permanent restaurant in Victoria’s Eccleston Yards. But that was eighteen months ago, and whilst we’ve had the kiosk and deli to keep us going, and a handful of pop up events, the restaurant proper has only just opened its doors. So was it worth the wait?

Tart has carried cool credentials from the beginning, starting out by catering for fashion shoots, bringing zesty, healthy food to the mouths of Stella McCartney and Kate Moss. So it should come as no surprise that the look and feel of Wild by Tart is effortless and utterly of-the-moment. Housed in a former power station, there’s exposed aluminium piping, walls dripping in house-plants, rattan chairs and velvet banquettes, plus high stools at the brass bar overlooking the kitchen – the seats to book if you’re dining à deux.

Our evening started very well with a simple yet delightful dish of perfect sourdough and whipped marmite butter. Need we say more. From there, all the dishes are designed to be shared, so take your pick from the slightly dizzying selection of Bites, Small Plates, the Grill and the Wood Oven. Ingredients are current and fresh, piquing our interest with the likes of fig vinegar, green tiger’s milk and salt & garlic toum. We wanted to try it all, and at the recommendation of our waitress ordered plates of celeriac taco’s, spicy clam nduja and cider tagliatelle, burrata with that fig leaf vinegar and the marinated quail with coal roasted Babaganoush and shaved fennel. Each plate was delicious, but the best thing came last of all, in the form of the skillet cookie, all warm, melty and gooey.

If you’re a fan of the stitched linen napkin on your lap or the starry wine glass in your hand, you need to pop into their on-site boutique where you can find these things available to buy along with hand-picked homewares inspired by the duo’s travels, think of it as a bit of that impeccable Tart taste to take home. Their vast empire now incorporates the shop, the Wild by Tart restaurant, the deli, take-away kiosk, oh and it all doubles as a photography studio and events space too. It’s an ambitious next step for fashion’s favourite foodies, and we wish them every success.

The insider’s car boot sale & a fashion charity sale

We’re rather excited by two very special sales coming up. First up on November 30th is a charity sale called Another’s Treasure held at Ennismore House and hosted by fashion investor Eiesha Bharti Pasricha. Here you’ll find nearly-new clothes from the wardrobes of Arizona Muse, Melissa Hemsley, Matilda Goad, Katherine Ormerod and many more.  Plus companies such as MATCHESFASHION, Liberty London, Olivia Von Halle, Johnstons of Elgin, Derek Rose, Rockett St George, Sonos and Pringle have also kindly donated many new items. There will be art, beauty, homeware and high fashion with prices starting from £5. All money raised will go directly to Shelter from the Storm, a completely free emergency night shelter.  Tickets for entry are just £2 which you can buy here.

Next up is an interiors car boot sale from The Bible of British Taste and Tat London & Friends.  This isn’t your average car boot sale though – firstly, it will take place underneath the Ivon Hitchens mural at Cecil Sharp House Camden in Primrose Hill (so you don’t need to freeze outside).  And secondly, those selling reads like a who’s who of the interiors and decorating world, all of whom are selling off their own possessions.  People confirmed selling include Benedict Foley, Charlie McCormick, Charlie Porter, Christina Wilson, Elizabeth Lord, Gabby Deeming, Hugh St Clair, Liz Elliot, Mary Killen, Molly Alexander and Wilfred Lewis, Rebecca Hossack, Retrouvius, Ros Badger, Ros Byam Shaw, Veere Greeney and Trine and William Miller.  See you there!

Amelia Freer workshops at Lime Wood Hotel

Nutritionist Amelia Freer’s reputation precedes her. As the author of three bestselling cookbooks, she boasts a mighty social media following and an array of famous clients that includes Victoria Beckham, Sam Smith and James Corden, whom she famously helped trim down. The only snag to such success, is that she’s now closed her books to new clients. Clever Lime Wood then, to invite her to be their in-house ‘wellness expert’. Her holistic approach means she’s sprinkled her magic everywhere from tweaking the menus delivered by chefs Angela Hartnett and Luke Holder, to the bedrooms which now come with a Bamford sleep spray by the pillow. She also runs a series of sell-out nutrition workshops at the hotel, with two new dates just released for 2020: Simply Good for You (29 Jan) and Healthy Cooking for Kids (18 March).

We attended one this October and, as total novices in the world of nutrition, felt a little trepidation. Would we need to know our chia seeds from our flax? Would we be shamed for preferring dairy to oat milk, and opting for a breakfast of croissants with jam? Not at all, as it turned out. The hotel was so warm and welcoming, lighting a fire in the Scullery for the small group of 15-20 people on the workshop – in our case all women – with everyone chatting and settling in for the day around the table together.

The workshop began with a series of talks from Amelia where we soon realised why she’s so popular with her clients. Not only is she completely charming and approachable but she’s also vehemently against fad diets and calorie counting. In fact, she seemed more interested in adding things in rather than cutting things out, stressing the need to maintain a balanced blood sugar level by eating three proper meals a day. The talks were eye-opening but not righteous, and the ideas felt genuinely do-able thanks to Amelia’s useful triangle tool for ticking off the nutrition needed per day – including a whopping six portions of vegetables and three pieces of fresh fruit.

Lime Wood Cookery School ® Amy Murrell

Easy when a delicious and nutritious lunch is provided for you (as it was here for us lucky workshoppers) but potentially more difficult to manage at home. That’s why the afternoon session in the hotel’s state-of-the-art Cookery School with demo’s and recipe suggestions was especially helpful. Healthy meals were whipped up before our eyes, including a speedy chicken curry (thickened with a secret ingredient – a big dollop of almond butter) and an easy fish parcel where you wrap up the pak choi and other veggies alongside the fish so supper is literally all cooked together in one washing-up-free bundle. We also gleaned plenty of smaller tips – like adding strips of lemon zest to a bottle of olive oil for an instant dressing – and came away with a shopping list of healthy things to stock in the larder (Brindisa jars of beans and artichokes etc.) that have made it so much easier to eat well since.

Finally, the day was rounded off with a walk through the trees that surround the hotel. Nestled in the New Forest, we spotted foragers hunting for mushrooms and hotel guests stomping through the leaves in colourful wellies you can pull on in the boot room. At tea time we left armed with meal plans and a goodie bag filled with treats. Amelia’s informal approach throughout the day made it so easy to ask questions – ‘after all – it’s a workshop not a lecture’ as she put it, and we came away feeling refreshed, inspired and full of good intentions, surprisingly enough ones that we’ve been able to keep to.

Forest Suite at Lime Wood ® Amy Murrell

The workshops can be booked for non-guests, but by the time you’ve got to Lime Wood you’ll be dying to stay the night. Book a room and you’ll not only get to enjoy the super spoiling hotel but you’ll also be granted access to the Herb House spa. Here you can book a Sarah Chapman facial or Bamford treatment, or just lie in the hydro pool gazing out of floor-to-ceiling windows at the changing leaves of the woods beyond.

Upcoming Amelia Freer workshops:

Healthy Cooking for Kids, 18 March 2020, £175 per person, find out more here.

We loved the gripping story of a marriage under strain, and here Jones will delve into race, class and issues about society that are prominent in the book. The evening talk hosted by Waterstones will be Jones’ first big event since she was announced as Winner of the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction, and it promises to be a fascinating evening.
