Elif Shafak and Cheltenham Lit Fest

Literary giant Elif Shafak relishes the opportunity to be one of the curators at this year’s Cheltenham Festival which opens this week. She loves this, the world’s oldest literary festival, and thinks it as relevant and important as ever with ‘much-needed opportunities for slow discussions that are both nuanced and thoughtful’. Following her recent move to London, we talk to Elif about what inspires her.

After your incredibly innovative 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World are you writing another book? Might it be set in the UK?

I am currently at a drunken stage with my new novel in that I am not sure yet where it will take me. But, yes, it will be set in part in London. Nature also plays a big part. This year, with the climate change emergency and spending more time in nature, it seems to be where I am going.

What impact has this strange year had on you?

I miss cultural events but when you stop travelling and go within you you appreciate all the small things: sitting under a tree, reading a book. The only silver lining of this year is that it has made us rethink our values and priorities.

Where do you find your inspiration for your books?
I am a visual person – images of a scene come to me, not the characters at first. I am always chasing the story.

Which of your books are you most proud of?

That’s very difficult to say because books change us – with each book something shifts inside your soul – that’s the same for a writer and hopefully the reader. By the time I have finished a book, I am not the same person.

Which book would you most liked to be made into a film?

I would love one of them to be made into a film. Fortunes of Love I can see on the Big Screen, whilst Leila’s story in 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World would be a good made by a small independant.

We know you love to listen to music as you write? What type of music do you like?

Your readers are going to be surprised by this answer. I love to listen to really loud heavy metal. I find fire really helps me write.

What is on your current reading list?

I read both non-fiction and fiction at the same time. This year I judged the non-fiction George Orwell prize and the winner was Kate Clanchy; her work is a delight. Novels I have read are The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave and On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by  Ocean Vuong.

Which city have you most enjoyed living in?

I love cities that is for sure. I love people co-existing and mingling in London – that’s precious. I love Edinburgh and how it pays attention to art. I love Istanbul – full of untold stories but it is not an easy place for author. But actually in my heart I am a nomad.

You write and talk in your lectures about the fragility of democracy and also the liberties of women? What is the most important thing we can do today?

I think the most important thing is to be aware of the danger of numbness. If you stop caring and disconnect that’s dangerous. Don’t take liberties for granted. The Western world has taken human rights and freedom of speech as a given but they are not. I care about diversity; inclusion is so important.

You write in both Turkish and English. What is your favourite English word?

There isn’t one particular word but the evolution of the English language. In Turkey we took out so many words that came from Arabic, Persian and Greek origins and that is sad the loss of words. In English the language is constantly expanding to include words from all backgrounds.

What other forms of art do you like?

I love galleries, plays and concerts. It breaks my heart that in economic crises art and culture are always the first to be hit. Politics sees art as a luxury but it is as essential as water and it’s vital for mental health.

What is your favourite clothes shop?

I am not good at shopping; I mostly wear black. But I love shopping for colourful accessories in Portobello – I can spend hours there.

How do you think things will change once things have settled after the pandemic?

Conscious optimism is needed but also creative pessimism. For hope and optimism to flourish we need to connect and understand each other’s stories. Hope comes from empathy.

How to you control anxieties?

It is a deeply anxious time. I find reading is a ritual. If I am worried I read poetry. If not philosophy or cookbooks. I walk a lot with my dog.

Who are you most excited about welcoming to the Cheltenham Festival?

The festival is close to my heart and I am honoured to be guest curator. Especially this year as there is such an urgency to talk about things: the flaws in our political system, what isn’t working, people’s fears and anxieties. What is going to be remarkable is that that there are many different views, backgrounds and styles and to bring them together to have a vivid slow discussion is very important.

Elif’s latest book, How to Stay Sane in an Age of Division is a powerful essay about the current uneasy times.

Award-winning British-Turkish novelist and storyteller Elif Shafak is a Guest Curator for this year’s Cheltenham Literature Festival, 2 – 11 October 2020. Programme and ticket information can be found at: www.cheltenhamfestivals.com

Meg Mathews on the menopause

Meg Mathews was at the centre of the 90s Brit Pop scene, the wife of Noel Gallagher with her own PR company, who, at the age of 50, started to suffer from 32 different issues that turned out to be the menopause.  Shocked at both the severity of her symptoms and the lack of knowledge and information about the menopause, she set up MegsMenopause in 2018.  A platform to raise awareness and understanding as well as creating a worldwide community to support women going through the menopause, Mathews has also just written her first book The New Hot.  Published on the 1st October, it is a frank and helpful guide for anybody curious about or suffering symptoms of the menopause.  Guiding you through the HRT question, beauty advice, exercise and eating, it’s an honest and witty guide to what happens next.

We learnt a lot reading your book. Why do you think there is such a lack of information about the Menopause today and why is it still such a taboo subject?

I’m so glad, thank you.  There is just not enough up-to-date information and support out there for the 13 million women this affects in the UK. I just wanted to write a book that was honest, that empowered and entertained while taking on the menopause with attitude and style.  Doctors only receive three hours on the menopause during their whole training. Employers and their HR departments need to be able to help support women during perimenopause and menopause.  We need to empower women to talk and get the information and treatment they need.  The embarrassment and shame around menopause must go.

It’s years of what we have been bought up hearing and we don’t know any different – things have moved on and we all have to catch up. I hope my book can help with this.

We particularly liked the My Story slots – where did you get these stories from?

I meet with people all the time and ask them to offer up their stories. Some of the women wrote into my website and gave us permission to share them. It was all organic and people liked to share their story.

What is the most common question that you get asked about the menopause?

How long will it last?! I’m sorry there is no answer….each woman is different.

It is very practical your book with an emphasis on Taking Control.  Do you think losing control is one of the most common traits that women feel during this time?

Yes… 100% I was so overwhelmed. I would not say ‘lose control’ but overwhelmed…. with everything.  I could not drive; my brain didn’t connect with my mouth. When I’m like this I do three things, number one ten mins of Yoga with Kassandra You Tube followed by her 10 minutes of affirmation and then breathing.  Breath in for five hold for five breath out for eight. This can help reset your brain.

Also, a good 20-minute walk outside in the fresh air can help.

Where do you live in London and why?

I have lived in Primrose Hill since 1995 – I love it because I’m part of the community it’s like a village. Local shops and grocery shops – I know everyone and have friends here and I love all the parks. I feel very privileged to live here.

Which is your favourite restaurant?

The Gunton Arms in Norfolk (a country house hotel and pub).

What are top beauty products?

Kat Burki – calming gel cleanser by Kat Burki.

Sealed with a loving kiss hyaluronic acid serum,

Mio Sleeping overnight serum,

Golden hour body moisturiser Mio,

Which are your favourite Instagram accounts to follow?

@Megsmenopause of course!

@RichieSwan great workouts I did through lockdown

@Reservoirpinkmagazine

@a.gallagherphotos

@BodyformUK

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

I do my Kassandra yoga for 10 mins on YouTube (you do it over 30 days with an affirmation), meditate for 5 to 7 mins, drink green juice (broccoli, fennel, lemon, rocket and celery etc) and go for a good walk.

With a covid autumn looming, what would your top tip be to women to keep up their spirits during this time?

I just think we really have to be very mindful and if you are responsible around your bubble and yourself it takes the anxiety away. Wearing my mask and washing my hands takes away the anxiety.

We have been through one lockdown and we will get through this.

Walking and talking are my two number one medicines – my life savers. If you are feeling vulnerable reach out to friends.

I meet a couple of friends with our dogs at 7am to walk socially distanced and talk each morning – it’s a game changer.

You can do yoga with youtube and Richie Swan on Instagram as amazing free workouts.

The New Hot: taking on the menopause with attitude and style by Meg Mathews, £12.65 on Amazon

Autumn comforts

The leaves are turning colour, the temperature has dropped and we’re ready for autumn.  This fall, however, we’re needing our small but cosy comforts more than ever (running a long bath, reading a great book, wrapping up warm and eating delicious food).  Here are some of our must-haves:

Inspired by the flowers from their own cutting garden, you can now buy Daylesford’s new curated selection of garden bulbs.  Plant now in the garden to flower next Spring or even better, in indoor pots for this Winter.

Skye Gyngell’s Spring Restaurant are adding cinnamon buns to their online shop this week and we can’t wait to try them (also on our shopping list are the spicy carrot soup and the Cardamom and plum ripple ice cream). Spring Restaurant (they deliver within a 12 km radius of the restaurant)

We might be biased (they are a Swedish brand after all!) but we’ve got a fair few of them, from cross country skiing to classic leather, and our Hestra gloves have never let us down.  Beautifully made, comfortable and warm, we’ve got our eyes on a pair of Kathryns this winter which now come in new colour ways.

We’re already big fans of bedlinen makers Coco & Wolf and it’s great news that they are about to open a Coco & Wolf shop at Liberty’s from Monday 5th October 2020.  Peruse their luxurious bedding and accessories (they really are super soft) with new and exclusive prints available too (both in-store and online too).

We can’t wait to read Nathalie Farman-Farma’s new design book Decors Barbares: The Enchanting Interiors of Nathalie Farman-Farma which was published last week and features her beautiful fabrics as seen in her homes in London, Connecticut and Lake Tahoe. £35.61 (reduced from £50) at Amazon

We love these soaps hand-crafted in Paris using only natural ingredients and fully recyclable packaging.  Around 25 Euros from Seemsoap or newly stocked at AimeLondon.

Rebecca Udall’s great new fluffy, scallop towels come in twelve different coloured trims.  From £12.50 at Rebeeca Udall

As we are envisaging as many hours in bed as possible, we’re treating ourselves to a new bedside light.  We’ve got our eyes on a glossy lamp with an Ophelia lampshade in Sky & Storm/Ecru from the Rosi de Ruig and Vanderhurd collaboration. From £95 at Rosi de Ruig
And we’re going to cuddle up under a blanket, preferably this Aristidia throw made from Merino and Cashmere wool.
Wearing these recycled cashmere trousers (made from the leftover fibres),
We’ve just invested in a new day cream and we’ve fallen hard for the Augustinus Bader The Cream.  It is light yet rich enough to make our skin feel moisturised and nourished.  It isn’t cheap though – luckily Liberty are offering 10% off right now

And finally, we’ve just started the latest Cormoran Strike mystery and we’re gripped. Of course, what we’re most interested in, is will Cormoran and Robin finally get together?! Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling). £9.99 at Amazon

Isla Simpson’s iPad design course

We love Isla Simpson’s illustrations and are hugely excited to hear we can now learn from the master thanks to the launch of her new digital course. Sign up now and learn how to use Procreate 5X, an iPad-based drawing app that allows you to scribe names and addresses, draw illustrations and paint pictures using Procreate brushes. The course takes 4-6 hours to complete and it’s advised you tackle it across a weekend, during which time you’ll learn how to create a menu and place card, recreating two of Isla’s favourite designs and adding your own personalisations too. Then there’s advice for printing, as well as tips for creating and executing your own designs from scratch. The course costs £140 and access lasts for a year but you can currently get 25% off when you sign up to Isla’s newsletter, and use the code prelaunch25 when booking before 9 October. The perfect way to spruce up your table settings this season.

And for little ones this month’s LOLA box is particularly recommended. Fantastic Faces looks at the work of Johannes Vermeer, Chris Ofili and Frida Kahlo who all painted portraits but at different times in history in completely different places around the world. It plays with the idea how how we perceive ourselves and others.  If you haven’t signed up to Lots of Lovely Art, this a great kit to start with.

3 Top New Restaurants to Book Now

It takes a lot of courage to open a restaurant in the current climate. We salute Imad’s Syrian Kitchen, Maison Francois and Fallow for doing just that. You might remember the youthful face of Matthew Ryle from 2018’s Masterchef the Professionals. He’s now heading up the kitchen at Maison Francois on Duke Street, a new brasserie from François O’Neill (formerly of Isabel and Brompton Bar & Grill) delivering delicious plates of rock oysters with sauce mignonette, pâté en croûte, poulet roti and pommes frites. The classic menu is executed superbly – even down the house green salad tossed with a perfect French dressing. Do try the moules flatbread to start and leave space to enjoy the dessert trolley that arrives on wheels with drawers opening to reveal macaroons and Madeleine and cannelles. If the menu is old-school the interiors are bright and contemporary with high concrete ceilings and an open bar. The atmosphere is glamorous and buzzy despite the distanced and well-spaced tables, and the lovely staff even seem to make their uniform stone linen masks look chic.

Across Piccadilly on Mayfair’s Heddon Street is Fallow, another new restaurant to book now. Here the focus is on sustainability and the menu zings with unusual combinations (the two Head Chefs met whist working at Dinner by Heston) like monkfish tail with bacon butter sauce and Kombu fries. The must-try signature dish – Corn Ribs with lime – is both original and delightful.  Again tables are well spaced and the air flows thanks to vast crittal windows that open up the restaurant to the outdoor seats that fill the street outside.

And some cheering news that Syrian chef Imad Alarnab of Imad’s Syrian Kitchen is opening a restaurant in Kingly Court this November. Originally from Damascus, Imad crossed Europe in 2015 and has since raised nearly £200,000 for refugees via Choose Love by running pop ups and supper clubs where his falafel have become notorious. The hugely popular lunchtime stall on Broadwick Street paved the way for the permanent site that will specialise in Syrian mezze as well as main dishes. Funding page here.

The most flattering jeans

There is no greater piece in your wardrobe than a favourite pair of jeans. Experience would suggest that they are not that easy to find. If you’re one of those people who hates buying jeans, chances are you might not be applying the Golden Rules for finding a flattering fit:

  • Hourglass – high rise and skinny (straight works too)
  • Short – bootcut or straight, either cropped or not
  • Boyish – straight or boyfriend
  • Tall – flared, straight or skinny

There are no specific rules for colour but bear in mind that darker shades will always make you look slimmer. To find the perfect size it’s always helpful to try on lots of pairs and we rate Selfridges as the best place in London to do this. Here of our favourite brands and cuts for the new season:
This vintage-style Charlotte high rise is extremely flattering in Whisper grey, £260 from Citizens of Humanity

Gorgeously rich colour, fit and feel, we love these Masscob Lykke jeans £260 from Aime London

A super-flattering bootleg fit by Frame. Le Mini Boot in Augusta, £230 from Trilogy

These Laurel high-risers from Paige have a bit of stretch. They are exclusive to Selfridges, £275 from Paige

For skinny jeans, you don’t need to go designer. H&M has an excellent range. Super skinny high jeans £14.99 from H&M

For a lot of fun we love these super flared wide leg high rise jeans, £144.95 from Scotch and Soda

A cross between skinny and straight this cropped Sessun pair of jeans in black denim is so French. Stanford jean £130 from Sessun

Another great crop but a snugger fit than the Sessun is the Paris jean (which has been around for years) from Mih. Comes in four colours. £165 from MiH Jeans

For one of our favourite creative looks, go vintage with the Levi 513. Currently one pair available at Beyond Retro for £36 from Levis

Are they jeans or sweatpants? Rag & Bone excel at all shapes of jeans and we think these are going to catch on. Miramar Sweatpants £270 from Rag and Bone

These Skye jeans from the new GOOP x A.P.C collection are sleek and super flattering. £275 from GOOP

Finally, for a smarter look try these tailored Indigo Dry Kathleen Jeans from King and Tuckerfield (a brand with superb eco credentials). £220 from King and Tuckfield

Book now for Marina Abramovic and Simon Armitage

Two events this October are worth booking now. Firstly to Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage in the Lake District where he wrote most of his much-loved poems. Here, on 1 October there will be a very special live event with Poet Laureate Simon Armitage in honour of National Poetry Day and to celebrate Dove Cottage’s re-opening after a mutli-million pound renovation. Simon’s reading will combine his own poetry with some of his favourite Wordsworth poems. The performance will also be live streamed from Grasmere and will not be available after the event, so do book a ticket to listen from home, they cost £7 and can be pre-ordered here.

Secondly, if you didn’t get to see Marina Abramović’s Mixed Reality performance piece, The Life at the Serpentine Gallery last year, it will be shown at Christie’s from 8 – 22 October. The ground-breaking piece allows viewers to have a digital encounter with the artist herself via a wearable spatial computing device. A dimensional photo rather like a hologram appears, before evaporating into thin air and it’s the first of its kind to be sold at auction. Tickets are free but must be pre-booked here. Open Monday – Friday 10am-6pm, weekends 12-5pm.

Pick me ups

The news has got rather scary again…which calls for some light relief. Here are a few NEW things we’re loving this week.

Donald Robertson Embroidery Sets

‘Be a warrior not a worrier’ seems a good motto for these times. It’s the favourite mantra of California-based artist Donald Robertson (AKA @drawbertson) whose hand-painted design has been transformed into an embroidery set by The Plum Stitchery. The canvas comes ready for you to needlepoint with black and pink wool or silk. Certain suppliers will ship to the UK, for example needlepoint.com – you need to email info@needlepoint.com to place you order, and the sets costs c.$120 plus shipping.

Latest binge Netflix series: Enola

This brand new series kicked off last night starring Millie Bobby Brown as the younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes.  When her mother, played by Helena Bonham Carter, disappears on her 16th birthday, Elona decides to escape finishing school and find her.  Also including appearances by Fiona Shaw and Frances de la Tour, the series is based on the six books by American author Nancy Springer and it was actually Bobby Brown’s idea to bring them to screen. Directed by Killing Eve’s Harry Bradbeer and written by His Dark Materials’ Jack Thorne, this is just the sort of fun escapism we need right now.

Napoli Gang, the delivery-only restaurant from Circolo Popolare and Gloria

We’re excited for the arrival of Napoli Gang, the latest venture from the Big Mamma Group (behind buzzy Circolo Popolare and Gloria). The delivery-only restaurant launches on 23 September and features a new menu that’s been entirely designed to withstand the process and arrive as good as it would at a restaurant. Delivery is limited to a 2-mile radius of its Shoreditch and Kentish Town outposts (Battersea is coming at the end of October) with dishes including Hot Damn pizza with spicy nduja, San Marzano tomato and candied red onions, antipasti sourced from small family-run artisan producers, wines and cocktails like the Better Days Spritz and the group’s famous dolci. Everything is done with characteristic good humour: their brilliant staff T-shirts are also now available to order here.

10pm curfews mean the bar is open at home, so make sure it’s well stocked. New company MARLO deliver fine wine by the bottle to your door. You don’t have to buy a case but rather can buy each bottle individually including old vintages and top names. You can also send a bottle wrapped with a hand-written note which would make a good present for someone you can’t see in person. A Little Bird readers get 15% off with the code: ALB15 from now until 31 December 2020.
On the first Sunday of the month, Chiswick High Road now transforms into a wondrous flower market. The idea is to recreate the Columbia Road vibe in West London – and lots of the traders are those you’d usually find there as well as other independent florists and growers like the Electric Daisy Flower Farm. Next dates: 4 October, 1 November, 6 December 9.30am-3pm. It does get very busy so go early or later in the day.
Alice Naylor-Leyland is queen of laying the table. Her latest trick is a collaboration with Poppy Delevigne that launches on Friday 25 September. Inspired by 18th century Chinoiserie the new tablescapes come in three colourways each featuring table linens, candlesticks, plates, bows and glassware.
Even the A-list aren’t immune from Zoom and this week the internet went mad for Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s dynamic in this virtual reading of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The  performance included Julia Roberts, Matthew McConaughey, Shia LaBeouf, Morgan Freeman and more – all to raise funds for CORE (COVID-19 relief efforts in vulnerable communities). Watch the full video here:

Fabulous homeware collaborations

A few of our favourite companies have teamed up this autumn with some brilliant results.

Ex-Vogue editors Serena Hood and Lucinda Chambers have spent their careers honing their taste and distinctive styles.  So it’s not too surprising that their new stationery line with Papier which showcases the signature design from their site Collagerie onto a selection of notebooks and notecards works so well.  Combining vibrant and rather autumnal colours, this distinctive stationery will brighten up any desk. Buy it .

If you’ve ever yearned after something from the design company Antoinette de Poisson but found them too expensive, then you’ll be very happy to hear that their collaboration with Monoprix comes out on December 2nd.  Including cushions, bedlinen, tablecloths, pyjamas, plates and other tableware, it features their distinctive patterns in slightly different colour ways.  We’re sure it will be a sellout so we’d advise that you put the date in your diaries and buy immediately.  Find more details .

Artist Fee Greening & Wallpaper company CommonRoom have paired up to produce three new wallpaper designs including Climbing Curious, Harlequin Pearl and Twin Flower.  Costing £140 per 10 metre roll, they will also be offered in bespoke colours and will be available from October onwards.  Shop the wallpaper .

Shrimps & Habitat’s first collaboration was so popular that they are back for a second round launching this October also.  This time it’s inspired by 1970s Palm Springs so think rattan, hand drawn painted patterns and a colour palette of sunshine yellow, vanilla cream and sage green with accents of soft pink and sky blue.  Not just textiles this time, there will also be artworks, furniture and lighting too.  Be the first to know by signing up here.

BFI London Film Festival

This year’s BFI London Film Festival has a brilliant line-up. This year for the first time ever you will be able to access over 50 virtual premieres online and be able to watch at home. These are broken into categories like Laugh, Love, Debate and Dare – where you might find Elisabeth Moss starring in Shirley, and Family where the latest Pixar film Soul stars Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs, Angela Bassett, Tina Fey and Jamie Foxx. As well as these virtual screenings, BFI Southbank has now re-opened with safety measures in place. Some of the best new films are being released here (and then at cinemas around the UK), including the timely and much-anticipated Mangrove from Steve McQueen that charts the true story of Mangrove 9, the black activist group that clashed with the police at a 70’s protest march and the race trial that ensued. It will screen for free and open the festival on 7 October. The program also includes Ammonite which features a love story between Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet, and Supernova with a love story between Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. Tickets go on sale to BFI Members from 10am on 15 September and to the public from 10am 21 September. Find the full program and book tickets here.

It’s goodbye for now…

The team at A Little Bird are taking a break to recharge and make some exciting changes behind-the-scenes. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
